Intersection of Colonial Avenue and Mowbray Arch Norfolk VA

At intersection of Colonial Avenue and Mowbray Arch are two great Norfolk homes still standing as of October 2013.  The house on the left (203 Colonial Avenue) was built in 1902.  The house on the right (442 Mowbray Arch) was built from 1891 to 1892.

McCullough Wharf was located along the Elizabeth River.  In the center background is former Norfolk City Hall and Courthouse.  On the left side is the City Market Armory.  On the right is the Haddington Building.  Around 1905 this canal was filled in became part of today's City Hall Avenue.

The Norfolk College For Young Ladies was build in 1880.  The building later become the Hotel Lee.  In 1983 it was destroyed by fire.

Atlantic Hotel (second) Downtown Norfolk VA

The second Atlantic Hotel was located on the corner of Granby Street and Main Street.  The hotel was build in 1868 and burnt down on January 31, 1902.

Norfolk Virginia City Hall 1938

This landmark was built in 1900 for the US Post Office and Federal District Court.  During 1937 it was bought by the City of Norfolk to house many city administrative office.  Today it is being redeveloped for new life a the Norfolk Public Library system's main branch.

Built during the 1850's this building served as Norfolk City Hall and Courthouse.  It ended its run as City Hall during 1937.  Today it is home to the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial.

Monticello Hotel Downtown Norfolk at the Intersection of Granby Street and City Hall Avenue

The Monticello Hotel was originally opened in 1989.  The hotel was destroyed by fire during January 1,1918 and reopened on March 8, 1919.  It was the largest hotel in Norfolk for 60 years was know as "A Hotel of Distinction.  The hotel closed during 1970 and was demolished during January 1976.

The Norfolk Federal Building occupies this space today.

The Hotel Savoy was located on the corner of Roanoke Avenue (now Atlantic Street) and East Main Street.  Land is currently occupied by the Bank of America building.

Downtown Norfolk Northside of Brooke Avenue

North side of Brooke Avenue shows the Navy YMCA built in 1909 which was financed by John D. Rockefeller.  In 1972 this building become Norfolk home of the Union Mission.  Today the building is vacant and for sale.
